However, what I can provide is some insight into the thought processes involved and the options you may want to consider in regards to putting together a tactical game plan. Part of the art of coaching is being able to think on your feet in real time and be decisive about the actions or non-actions you are going to take. In order to make smart adjustments you must be in control of your emotions and keep a clear head when coaching the game. Coaches who ride an emotional roller coaster all game will probably have trouble making quality decisions. The goal of this book is to provide coaches with various trains of thought when it comes to making tactical decisions. Being exposed to multiple tactical perspectives and ideas should help when it comes to putting together your game plan. In the modern age of soccer it is not uncommon for a team to change formations three or four times in one game depending on the coach. Pep Guardiola is well known for making multiple formation changes in the same game. Then there are other top coaches who have not changed anything major tactically for years. Arsene Wenger is a very good example of that at Arsenal FC. Arsenal has a brand of soccer they believe in and they do their best to stay true to that style – usually playing some type of 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1. I don’t claim to have the magic formula for tactical success but I am confident you will find the information in “Strategize” useful.
