About the Author:

Saskia Sassen is the Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology and the former Chair of The Committee on Global Thought at Columbia University (saskiasassen.com). Among her recentbooks are The Global City (1991;2001), A Sociology of Globalization(2007), Territory, Authority, Rights:From Medieval to Global Assemblages (2008), Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy (2014; new edition forthcoming), and Cities in aWorld Economy (1994; 2018). She is currently working on Unstable Territories, based on theStorss Lectures she delivered at the Yale University Law School. For UNESCO, sheorganized a five-year project on sustainable human settlement with a network ofresearchers and activists in over thirty countries; it is published as one ofthe volumes of the Encyclopedia of LifeSupport Systems (2006; eolss.net). Her books are translated inover twenty languages. She has written for TheGuardian, The New York Times, Le Monde, Financial Times, Republica,El Pais, OpenDemocracy.net andseveral other newspapers and journals.
