Synopsis

THREE KINGS: AXIS ROYAL ARMIES ON THE RUSSIAN FRONT 1941, is about the armed forces of the kingdoms of Italy, Romania, and Hungary, which fought alongside the German Wehrmacht, in the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union. REVIEW by Dr. Oleg Romanko of the Federal University of Crimea. FOREWORD written by Colonel John R. Griffin (retired), US Army Special Forces. Author Patrick Cloutier discusses the motivations of the three Axis kingdoms for going to war against the USSR, the organization of the forces which participated, their roles as integral components of Army Group South, and traces their movements and progress during the course of Operation Barbarossa. He makes reference to the books of a number of authors - including Russian historians - through whose works we get a detailed view of events in the Ukraine in 1941. Included are accounts of Soviet armored trains in combat, identification of Red Army units which opposed the Germans and their Axis allies, and discussion of the political considerations which may have influenced the military decisions taken by both sides.

Review

From Dr. Oleg Romanko's Review in "The Science Journal of Volgograd State University":HOW KINGS BECAME PAWNS.     On June 22, 1941 Germany attacked the USSR. Simultaneously, her allies in the Anti-Comintern Pact entered the war: Romania, Hungary and Finland. Soon they were joined by the governments of Slovakia and Croatia. In preparing for the "crusade against Bolshevism", Hitler expected the wide use of the armies of his satellites. Therefore, all of them, except Bulgaria, sent their military contingents either directly to the Eastern Front, or as troops for the protection of rear areas, in the occupied Soviet territories.     The question of the participation of the satellites of Hitler's Germany in the war against the USSR, is very relevant for modern historical science. On the one hand, its consideration helps to understand what, in general, was the contribution of these countries to the military efforts of the Axis bloc. On the other hand, an analysis of the degree of these efforts shows the particular motivations of individual satellite states. Finally, these events are interesting from the point of view of the history of international relations, during the Second World War.     In connection with the above, one cannot fail to note the new book of the American historian and political scientist, Patrick Cloutier, "Three kings: Axis Royal Armies on the Russian Front 1941", published in the USA in 2015...In his new monograph, Mr. Cloutier set himself the goal of showing the causes and consequences of participation in the war against the Soviet Union, of the three satellites of Nazi Germany: Romania, Hungary and Italy. At the same time, he chose the period from June to December 1941 - the beginning and failure of the Hitler blitzkrieg - as the chronological framework of his research.   Mr. Cloutier's monograph was written on the basis of a very wide range of publications published in Russian, Ukrainian, English, German and Italian. The use of literature in different languages allowed the author to collect significant factual material and take into account the diversity of points of view on this problem. The source base is lengthy and is, first of all, collections of documents and memoirs. A similar approach to the selection of sources led to the fact that Cloutier wrote his book, not in a strictly scientific, but in a popular scientific manner. However, in our opinion, the book has only benefited from this, since it does not have the many shortcomings inherent in strictly academic studies.Mr. Cloutier rightly argues that Romania, Hungary and Italy had completely different motives for participating in the war on the side of Germany. And only in Romania, were these motives associated with some real claims against the Soviet Union. In fact, only Italy really believed that it was participating in a "crusade against Bolshevism".Patrick Cloutier wrote a valuable book, in which he convincingly showed how and why the road to catastrophe for Romania, Hungary and Italy began, and how their rulers, having decided to take part in the campaign of Germany against the Soviet Union, in fact, went from being kings to pawns. There is no doubt that Mr. Cloutier's book will take its place in the historiography of the Second World War, both in terms of the spectrum of sources involved, the depth of disclosure of the topic, and the originality of his conclusions.     hfrir.jvolsu.com/index.php/en/archive-en/553-science-journal-of-volsu-history-area-studies-international-relations-2018-vol-23-no-1/criticism-and-bibliography/1428-romanko-o-v-as-kings-become-pawns-book-review-cloutier-p-three-kings-axis-royal-armies-on-the-russian-front-1941-text-p-cloutier-charleston-sc-createspace-independing-publishing-platform-2015-160-p
