Born in a splendid litter of Samoyed puppies and whelped by a champion mother, Sammy asserts his independence early on by thoroughly exploring his environment, including the garden. He then experiences the shock of being sold and exchanges the tranquillity of a village for the bustle of London streets. His new owner is captivated by his cuddly appearance and sweet smile but disregards what she is told about the downside of puppy ownership, especially in the case of Samoyeds, which have an occasional fur shed that can be quite spectacular. Finally exasperated beyond measure, Sammy’s new owner returns Sammy to his breeders as 'at fault albeit not faulty'. As experienced championship show judges, Sammy’s breeders, John and Sheila Greenaway, can see his potential, and so they decide to keep him.
During his full life, Sammy experiences many events both serious and amusing. He suffers the awful trauma of being stolen, but his natural intelligence and innate determination help in his recovery. He enjoys the fun of helping pull Father Christmas's sleigh into a primary school's party. As Sammy matures, he is shown very successfully and finally achieves the title of champion. Coincidentally, the story carries useful information for anyone considering taking up the enjoyable hobby of dog showing and also imparts helpful information for those interested in learning more about the Samoyed breed.

Nigel Flaxton (pen name) opened three new schools as a head before retiring to concentrate on the hobby he shared with his wife—breeding, showing, and judging dogs, particularly Samoyeds. He judged at championship shows, including Crufts, and also overseas from Finland to New Zealand. He has also written books in different genres: Greetings Noble Sir, is a gently amusing semi-autobiography which comments on the great changes in teaching and learning since the Second World War and is available on Amazon; and Moltation, is a short sci-fi story about the discovery of an amazing means of self-protection and is also available on Amazon. The website www.roadfork.co.uk offers Road Fork in the Valley as a free download, which is a book based on the revelations of Emanuel Swedenborg, the 18th century Swedish scientist, nobleman, theologian, and seer, in which six disparate characters begin the exploration of their surprising continued existence after death.
