The complete librettos to two of W. S. Gilbert's earliest successes, “Robert the Devil” and “Thespis.” Gilbert’s operatic parody of Meyerbeer's grand opera, “Robert the Devil” ran for over 120 performances in 1868 at London's Gaiety Theatre where, as the Times critic noted, "The burlesque has been received with a storm of approbation." Three years later the Gaiety Theatre would produce Gilbert and Sullivan's first collaboration, "Thespis, or the Gods Grown Old” which the Illustrated Times hailed as "rich in humour and so delicate in music."
