Is it ever too late to become the person you might have been? Empty-nester Elaine Ryan Alfonzi would answer with an unequivocal "yes!" Elaine never thought her life would turn out this way: fifty pounds overweight, unhappily married, and the target of endless criticism and derision from those closest to her. She feels as if her best days are behind her and there is no longer a place in the world where she fits in. And yet, there was once a most magical time in her twenties when she fell passionately in love for the first and, as it would turn out, only time with Malcolm "Doc" Dawes. Elaine would do almost anything to find the love of her life again, including almost getting herself killed. She's never forgotten the rapture she felt with him: to love and be loved unconditionally. Love has been a precious commodity long withheld from her by her parents since gaining weight as an adolescent. But the years have passed without a trace of Malcolm, and Elaine has built around herself an unhealthy cocoon in which she hides from the real world - taking comfort in food and playing video games that allow her to create the life she wishes she had. She knows she needs a change from her lousy marriage, toxic neighbors, family members, and her own worst enemy: herself. Fearful, insecure and out of options, Elaine chooses to live an unhappy life of comfort and routine rather than risking it all for what that little voice in the back of her head has whispered for most of her life: "You could do better." Be careful what you wish for as Elaine's world is abruptly turned upside down and her immediate focus becomes all about survival. Her past finds its way to her present and plays a pivotal role in the next stage of her life. Betrayal, revenge, sex and secrets are all part of her new journey. Can she reinvent herself for the world she's chosen not to face for thirty years, or will she prove all the critics in her life right? And throughout the tumult, she wonders, will she ever get a second chance at first love? This book is intended for mature audiences.

Review:
  • FINALIST - Best First Book 2016 by the New England Chapter of the Romance Writers of America.
  • REVIEW by IndieReader  "LETTING MYSELF GO is a heart-warming story of a woman learning how to stand on her own two feet and love the person she has become....Newton deftly manages the flashbacks, to make both the past and the present interesting and seamless....Because LETTING MYSELF GO is a story about personal growth, Elaine is at times a pathetic, self-indulgent individual, but it's watching Elaine's growth from this state that makes the novel such an interesting read.  This is a book about a woman learning to love herself." - IndieReader
