Review

“This volume by Wilson and Smith pushes the boundaries of interpersonal communication—across paradigmatic, methodological, disciplinary, and geographic boundaries, using the novel and engaging approach of having senior and up-and-coming scholars tell the story of their research programs, including what sparked their interest, how the work has unfolded over time, and lessons learned. This dynamic approach to the field makes the book compelling and inspiring for a broad audience from students to seasoned scholars within and outside the discipline of communication. It makes a significant contribution by presenting cutting-edge advances in a range of interpersonal communication theories. The book is novel, substantial, and a gem for the field.”
Dawn O. Braithwaite, Ph.D., Willa Cather Professor and Chair, Department of Communication Studies, University of Nebraska—Lincoln

“Reflections on Interpersonal Communication Research is perhaps most remarkable for serving so many seemingly incongruent purposes exceedingly well. The chapters are accessible and appropriate for students or others needing an introduction to the area, yet even a senior scholar of interpersonal communication will learn a great deal. There is significant attention to the development of the area of study and particular research programs, but the book is extremely forward-looking and inspiring. It is a cliché’ to say that a book belongs on every scholar’s shelf, but I cannot say that about this volume: The study of interpersonal communication will be enriched the more people read the volume.”
John P. Caughlin, Professor and Head, Department of Communication, University of Illinois
