From the Back Cover

Big Data is the new reality.Data, mathematics and analytics has underpinned human endeavour in science, medicine and technology for centuries. Business has now grasped the opportunity data presents, the most recent catalyst being the 'digital revolution' which created a tidal wave of new, real-time data, revealing new dimensions of consumer preferences, shopping and social habits.Despite of the size, speed or source of the data, Big Data drives the need to make sense out of the chaos; and to find meaning on the data that is constantly changing and to find relationships between the data created. Understanding this interconnectedness and being able to harvest the information hidden in Big Data unlocks Big Data's value which can only be gained by being able to tackle our own Big Data challenges.
A report by the World Economic Forum, declared 'data' a new class of economic asset, likes currency or gold. Data is in the driver's seat. It's there, it's useful and it's valuable. Big data will have an impact on all industries and every process. Its influence will be felt in business planning, research, sales, production and elsewhere. This amounts to nothing less than new industrial revolution. Data themselves have become an important commodity, actively bought and sold within a global, multi-billion dollar market. Big data is changing the way companies of all sizes, in all industries, go about their business. Big data analytics has the potential to transform the way healthcare providers use sophisticated technologies to gain insight from their clinical and other data repositories and make informed decisions. A recent Gartner report concluded that companies that are smart with data will have a 25-30% competitive advantage annually.
The impact of data abundance extends well beyond business ensuring funding for social programs. Big Data has the potential to be "humanity's dashboard," an intelligent tool that can help combat poverty, crime and pollution. A recent Accenture and GE study found that almost 90 percent of companies list Big Data analytics as one of their top priorities, and believe that Big Data analytics will shift the competitive landscape within the next three years.
The book provides an opportunity for scholars and researchers in big data and health science, business intelligence, social scientists in developments to update their knowledge on the abovementioned issues.
The chapters presented is based on an extensive research with the literature from across humanities, social sciences and the sciences and from popular culture, journalism, and industry publications, and based on my lifelong experience of working earlier in Analytics and now in Big Data Analytics as a Statistician.

From the Inside Flap

There is a lot more data, all the time, growing at 50 percent a year, or more than doubling every two years, estimates IDC, a technology research firm. It's not just more streams of data, but entirely new ones. For example, there are now countless digital sensors worldwide in industrial equipment, automobiles, electrical meters and shipping crates. They can measure and communicate location, movement, vibration, temperature, humidity, even chemical changes in the air.
Data is in the driver's seat. It's there, it's useful and it's valuable. A report by the world economic forum, declared data a new class of economic asset, likes currency or gold. Data themselves have become an important commodity, actively bought and sold within a global, multi-billion dollar market. For governments, widespread, dynamic data are providing new insights about their own operations, as well as reshaping the means to govern and regulate society.
Big Data is the current term given to the wide use of data collected from digital, technological, and analogue sources generating insights from a wide variety of customer, commercial and environmental information. Big Data is used to improve business understanding of markets, allowing improvements in customer experience and organisational performance. It is used to develop better understanding of customer preferences, habits and considerations in making transactions with different categories, brands and channels. The successful use of data in marketing leads to improved customer experience, a better exchange of value between customers and organisations, and improved business performance.
Big data is changing the way companies of all sizes, in all industries, go about their business. From the way they understand their markets, to how they mine information about their own operations; big data is unlocking insight at every turn. It has become an industry in and of itself, spawning new businesses dedicated to enabling the collection and analysis of big data. And its transformative effects on existing companies have been dramatic. Of course, big data will always be but one of the tools that companies use to inform decisions. Companies that fail to develop a competency around it are likely to be left behind. Fortunately, the science of extracting insight from data is constantly evolving. Tools are more readily available as industries begin to invest in the technology that supports big data.
Big data will have an impact on all industries and every process. Its influence will be felt in business planning, research, sales, production and elsewhere. This amounts to nothing less than new industrial revolution. The impact of data extends well beyond business ensuring funding for social programs. By digitizing, combining and effectively using big data, healthcare organizations ranging from single-physician offices and multi-provider groups to large hospital networks and accountable care organizations stand to realize significant benefits. A recent Gartner report concluded that companies that are smart with data will have a 25-30% competitive advantage annually.
The book 'Applied Big Data Analytics: Evolution, Platforms & Tools, Use cases, Benefits, Impact and Paradox', being first of its kind, has summarized on all the above issues. It is expected to help prepare one to identify opportunities to apply data driven innovation and decision making, leverage and manage analytics projects, and develop "big data" driven client solutions.
