Known for his various contributions to biblical scholarship (Poetry and Prophecy, Great Poems of the Bible, How to Read the Bible), James Kugel has been engaged with the overlap of poetry and the Bible since his first book, The Idea of Biblical Poetry. He was appointed poetry editor of Harper’s Magazine in 1972, and in the same year was named a Junior Fellow in poetry at the Harvard University Society of Fellows. His poems have appeared in Poetry (Chicago), the Antioch Review, Harper’s Magazine, and other journals. James Kugel was the Starr Professor of Hebrew How to Read the Bible won the National Jewish Book Award in 2007.
