The reasons behind the writing of this book are essentially two: the first is our shared love for the Sorrento Coast, and the second is our common desire to replicate the success of our first book: Fragments of Naples (Ricerca ’90 Publisher, January 2015, 302 pages, printed in the USA). In our previous book, which for one of us (Ciro Discepolo) was the beginning of an already substantial series of books, we chose the 8.2x6 inches, which is still one of our favourite formats. This format has two very interesting benefits: the first is that it enables us to fully exploit the 4:3 format of negatives. The second is that the printed book can be browsed as a photo album and can thus be used in a pleasant and convenient way. Moreover, the book can be simply mailed by mailbox, something that in our opinion should not be underestimated. However, we made a mistake during that first experience. We did not realize that that format required no more than 212 pages. Our book instead consisted of 302 pages but we disliked the idea of sacrificing 30% of its content. For this reason, and only for that book, we compromised and used a slightly different format that, nonetheless, implied that the readers should browse the pages by rotating the book to 90 degrees. Not really the ideal reading experience considering our initial plan. Since then, however, we have been using the photo album format for all the other volumes (Neapolitans, Glimpses of Nightwork in Campania, Nisida, the juvenile prison and Tourists&Travellers), with all the aforementioned benefits. The book you are holding now in your hands has the same format and, like the others, is a fully-coloured book. To be honest, the 212 page limit was a burden to us. In some chapters we had to cut out dozens of pages to conform to the desired format, as in the case of the beautiful Museum Correale in Sorrento, the ruins of the Roman Villa Pollio, and the many pictures taken at dawn from boats off the Sorrento coast... (from the preface of the book).
