A principios del siglo XV, en Neirivue, villa del helvético cantón de Friburgo, el rico ganadero Juan Bautista Keller celebra en su casa la noche de San Juan. A la fiesta asisten Ida, su hija, y Arnoldo Kessman, joven de origen incierto que desde su infancia está al servicio del conde de Montsalvens. Ida y Kessman se aman, pero saben que difícilmente consentirá Keller su matrimonio. Durante la fiesta, alguien refiere una costumbre popular: la velada del helecho... Satanás aparece esa misma noche para entregar una fortuna a quien se encuentre velando el helecho, siempre y cuando este le venda su alma.

Precursora del feminismo en España y una de las más grandes poetisas de la lengua castellana según la consideración de Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo. Está considerada, además, como una de las precursoras de la novela hispanoamericana.
