Homer was believed by the ancient Greeks to have been the first and greatest of the epic poets, the leader of Greek culture. He is author of the first known literature of Europe.
Herodotus estimates that Homer lived 400 years before his own time, which would place him at around 850 BCE.

It also mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege.
"The Odyssey" , sequel to "The Iliad", mainly centers on the Greek hero Odysseus (known as Ulysses in Roman myths) and his enthralling journey home after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to reach Ithaca after the ten-year Trojan War. In his absence, it is assumed he has died, and his wife Penelope and son Telemachus must deal with a group of unruly suitors.
