About the Author

I have been an avid fly fisherman for about foryty-five yearsnow and I have been guiding and instructing professionally for over fifteenyears. However, unlike most fly fishermen, I have a passion for small, hidden, mountain streams where the trout are native and very wary and thus demand theutmost skill level from an angler. In addition, I dearly love to teach peopleabout the art of fly fishing or, "trout hunting" as I prefer to think of it andthus, I thoroughly enjoy every moment I spend with both my students and myclients. Thus, it was my love of "trout hunting" on small, mountain streamsthat first lead me to consider the idea of becoming a fly fishing instructorand guide and my first trip as a guide convinced me that teaching others aboutthe sport of fly fishing was something that I was truly meant to do in life.Since then, I have spent countless hours exploring our local streams and myobservations have lead me to many insights that I would love to share withyou.

From the Inside Flap

I have been a professional fly fishing guide and instructor for over fifteen years and, I love to teach my students about the art of fly fishing. Thus, I have chosen to write this guide at the urging of many of my clients who were also wonderful students and made me very glad to be a guide and instructor!

However, unlike most guides, I am a dedicated instructor and thus, I have taught several hundred students the fine art of fly fishing over the years. Consequently, based upon my experience as a professional alpine ski instructor for a local ski resort where I learned, and then improved, the lesson progression that I was taught, I have developed my own, unique, lesson progression for teaching novice fly fishermen the art of fly fishing which has proven to be very successful. In fact, my system enables me to take a fly fisherman of any skill level and plug them in at the appropriate point regardless of whether they are highly experienced or have never had a fly rod in their hand before. In addition, I became fascinated with science at an early age and observing Nature and attempting to discern why any given animal or plant does what it does has long been a favorite form of entertainment to me that I lovingly call "nature television". Consequently, I have been privileged to make many unique observations over the years concerning fish behavior which has led me to an intense study of trout and their behavior and thus, I have endeavored to include everything that I have learned about both fly fishing and trout behavior over the years in the following book.
