This notable addition to the first-person accounts of World War II relates the experiences of Robert F. Mundell as told to his son David F. Mundell. A radio operator in the 8th Army Air Corps, Robert Mundell's B-24 bomber was shot down over Italy on his first combat sortie. He subsequently survived capture and escaped from a POW camp, managing to elude his captors in the rural Italian countryside. More than a tribute of father by son, the Mundells' book provides a window into one man's service in the greatest war of the century. Extensively researched, with photos, detailed aircraft diagrams, maps and personnel lists.

Robert Mundell recalls that on December 7, 1941 he learned of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor from the radio during a lunchtime break from hauling feed by horse and wagon on the family's Colorado ranch. He enlisted in the U.S. Army two months later. After his service as recounted in this book, he was discharged from the Army in October 1945 and returned to his life as a cattle rancher, husband and father. His son and co-author David Mundell grew up on the family cattle ranch and went on to a long career as a commercial airline pilot. David Mundell retired to Sandpoint, Idaho.
