The Master and Margarita is a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, written between 1928 and 1940, but unpublished in book form until 1967. The story concerns a visit by the devil to the fervently atheistic Soviet Union. Many critics consider it to be one of the best novels of the 20th century, as well as the foremost of Soviet satires.

A trained doctor, Mikhail Bulgakov (1891 - 1940) became one of his era's most brilliant and daring writers. His career was plagued by Soviet censorship, and The Master and Margarita was never published in his lifetime.
'One of the greatest modern Russian novels.' The Independent 'The Master and Margarita is my favorite, favorite book in the world ever by Mikhail. To me it's the greatest exploration of the human imagination, and it's about forgiveness and life and history, and it's just the most incredible book that I've ever read; I read it once and then I read it almost immediately again.' Daniel Radcliffe
