Amulet IV: Veni, Vidi, Vici by author Fredrik Nath is a historical novel set
in the Roman time period. In this fourth installment in the Amulet series,
all of which takes place during the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, our
hero is Aulus Veridius Scapula. Aulus, as an arena fighter and legionary,
has already been through great hardships in the previous installments of
the series, fighting to keep his family safe and his inherited wealth in his
possession. Now, however, Julius Caesar needs financiers for his army,
and Aulus' son faces kidnap at the hands of the little king Pharnaces.
Cunning plots, bloody battles, and even romance follow as Aulus' life
takes yet another unexpected turn. As Rome falls, perhaps this hero will
finally rise to the place he deserves.
Having not read the previous installments of Amulet, I was pleasantly
surprised to find myself following the story really well from the start.
Fredrik Nath fills in all the knowledge a new reader needs as he
introduces us to Aulus and his wife Hypsicratea, plus their two young sons.
Aulus is a relatable character, a man who has suffered much and just
wants to be able to relax into his new found wealth. I found myself
sympathizing with him from the first pages, right through his struggles to
the novel's very satisfying conclusion. Amulet IV: Veni, Vidi, Vici is a wellresearched
and immersive piece of historical fiction that any fan of the
Roman Empire is certain to love.

For all of his claims of being a simple man, Aulus Veridius Scapula is an
integral part of the machinery that formed the Roman Empire under
Julius Caesar in this engrossing fictional account by Fredrik Nath. A former
legionnaire who then spent time fighting in the arena, only to discover an
inheritance and become quite wealthy, Scapula has a lot to offer the
leader to whom he pledged his allegiance. While trying to live a quiet life
with his family in Amulet IV: Veni, Vidi, Vici, Scapula becomes embroiled
in Caesar's return to Rome and the resulting civil war. Not only that, his
son has been kidnapped and, with Caesar's blessing, Scapula returns to
the Bosporan Kingdom to find him and bring him home. His good heart
provides him with numerous advantages along the way, but there is
always a question whether the gods want him to succeed or not. With the
help of some freed slaves, Scapula reaches the palace of the little king,
Pharnaces, and relies on his wits to help him find his son. The past
catches up to him, though, and there is a race to the finish - will it be in
Scapula's favor or will the power of Caesar not make a difference?
With powerful emotions and plenty of life or death action, Amulet IV:
Veni, Vidi, Vici by Fredrik Nath takes you to the heart of the turmoil of the
birth of the Roman Empire under Julius Caesar. This first person narrative
draws you into the story, helping you feel every emotion and experience
every doubt that drives Scapula as he tries to do the best he can for his
family while events unfold around him that he can't escape. This is an
excellent story that transports the reader into the time clearly and
excellent story that transports the reader into the time clearly and
emotionally. Great descriptions and the depth of and differences between
the characters make them quite real. Amulet IV is extremely well written,
thoroughly engaging and quite informative whether you have read the
previous volumes or not - which you will certainly want to do after
enjoying this one.

After the death of his first wife Aripele, Aulus rescues his Pontic love Hypsicratea--former queen of the indomitable Mithridates the Great--and with his newly inherited riches, thanks in part to Cicero's legal savviness, they return to Rome with their two inherited sons, Bazes and Quintus. When Quintus--the son of Aripele--is mistaken for Bazes--the son of Mithridates--and is kidnapped by his half-brother and reigning Bosporan King, Pharnaces II of Pontus, Aulus will stop at nothing, including picking up his sword again, betraying the one he loves, and offering up his own life to bring Quintus home.
Author of more than a dozen books, Fredrik Nath's fervorous writing melds together the best of Kate Quinn and Ben Kane. Readers looking for a full plate of action, drama, historical context, and even a touch of romance need look no further than Amulet IV: Veni, Vidi, Vici's robust storyline where characters come to life and one could easily assume were based on actual people alongside their non fictional historical counterparts--Caesar, Cicero, Mithridates, etc.
Nath unfolds a prodigious story where readers will be relieved to know they don't have to be history buffs, or even like Roman history, as the story itself and not the historical aspect acts as the supporting platform for this entire series. The intrinsic journey of a father's love, choosing one's morals over societal expectations, and the ever harrowing command, conquer and ruthless slaughter exposes the dark side of mankind and just how far we can fall in times of weakness.
Amulet IV isn't a Roman hack-and-slash novel despite the book's non stop action. Nath maintains a gripping and consistently unpredictable storyline from cover to cover, overflowing with the harsh realities of ancient Rome that will have readers hearts palpitating as they easily devour Amulet IV in one sitting. Whether reading the series or as a standalone book, readers will feel a part of this perfectly executed story and is undeniably just the book to wet your palate. You will want to pick up Amulet IV
, or even the entire series, as your next Roman adventure awaits!
