Synopsis

Jules Verne (1828-1905) is one of the most recognizable names in Western literature, coming to be known as one of the Fathers of Science-Fiction. Although he studied to be a lawyer and held stock trading jobs, he quickly learned that he had a knack for weaving adventurous stories of travels and expeditions. It didn’t hurt that one of his teachers may have been inventor Brutus de Villeroi, who created the first submarine for the U.S. Navy. Verne wrote about air travel and space travel 50 years before either was possible.

About the Author

Jules G. Verne was born in Nantes, the former capital of Brittany, France. Verne went to Paris to study law but began writing stories and working in theatre as well. When Verne's father discovered that his son was writing rather than studying law, he promptly withdrew his financial support. He then worked as a stockbroker.
His wife encouraged him to pursue his writing, and he became acquainted withPierre - Jules Hetzel, an important French publisher. Hetzel helped improve Verne's writings, which until then had been repeatedly rejected by other publishers. He died a wealthy man in 1905.
