JORIS-KARL HUYSMANS (1848-1907), romancier français. Après une série de romans de tendance naturaliste (« Marthe, histoire d´une fille » (1876), « En ménage » (1881)), il adopta une autre modalité en « À rebours » (1884), dans laquelle le protagoniste, l´aristocrate Des Esseintes, tourne le dos à la société et trouve dans la création un monde propice à la pratique de l´extrême conscience de soi. L´œuvre à été considérée comme un vrai manuel de l´extravagance fin de siècle. Elle a été très admirée par Wilde, qui l´a introduit dans « Le portrait de Dorian Gray » comme « le livre jaune » que Lord Henry Wotton donne à Dorian. Les derniers travaux d´Huysmans incluent quatre romans dans lesquels il présente le progrès spirituel du personnage central, Durtal, vers le catholicisme romain : « Là-bas » (1891), « En route » (1895), « La Cathédrale » (1898) et « L´Oblat » (1903).

J.K.Huysmans began writing as a naturalist in the style of Zola. .He changed from being an obscure author and art critic to one of the most famous authors of his day with the publication of A Rebours (Against Nature) in 1884. His novel about Satanism, La-Bas (1891)is the cult novel of the nineteenth century.
