More and more people are being diagnosed with ADHD, autism, and a growing range of mental health conditions. Behaviors that might once have been seen as part of ordinary human experience are increasingly labeled as disorders, particularly among young people. At the same time, distress has become intertwined with powerful commercial, media, and institutional interests.
So how can we tell when distress is a normal response to life’s challenges and when it requires medical treatment?
In Searching for Normal, Dr. Sami Timimi examines the political, cultural, and economic forces shaping modern mental health diagnosis. He questions the rapid expansion of psychiatric labels and explores how pharmaceutical companies, media narratives, and professional systems have influenced the way we understand emotional suffering.
Offering a thoughtful and compassionate alternative, Timimi advocates for a holistic approach that sees people in the context of their families, cultures, relationships, and strengths. Rather than reducing distress to symptoms alone, he encourages a broader reframing of how we think about mental health and how we respond to it.
Searching for Normal is a timely and humane call to reconsider what we mean by “normal” and to place human experience back at the center of care.
