Synopsis

This book is what I would use for my textbook teaching my six-credit Digital Publishing community college course for the Business Graphics degree I designed, taught, and led for 18 years. This is a major update for me. Many of the changes I've been waiting for with ePUB production have been implemented. InDesign now stands at the top of the heap for book production in general and ePUB production in particular. You do not need to know code, though understanding how HTML and CSS works will aid your conceptual understanding. The new fixed layout ePUBs will show gradient paragraph rules, gradient strokes and fills in tables, and much more--but justification does not work in FXL. The exported ePUBs upload flawlessly to the iBooks Store and Kobo Writing Life. The ePUB2 with embedded fonts uploads to Draft2Digital and Smashwords. Tables and lists are not there yet, but you can shade the background of a paragraph (in a style). These are very good ePUBs. Finally, the 21st century book publishing software we need is within our grasp. There's still more to come, but the present version is very good.

From the Author

This book is the summation of what I have learned about book design and self-publishing since the first book I designed back in the mid-1980s. In the late 1990s, I wrote, designed and formatted six different textbooks for various traditional publishers. I formatted them as part of my contract with them because I was discussing techniques they hadn't implemented yet.By the dawn of the new millennium, I was self-publishing my curriculum in PDF form for my online students. This ramped up with the emergence of Lulu, Scribd, Createspace, Kindle, Nook, iBooks, Kobo, and others.By 2009, I had begun writing and publishing, for myself and others, full-time under the name of Radiqx Press. Since then I have published, and produced for others, several dozen books as I strove to develop the most efficient workflow I could manage for writing and producing books. As this is a one-person project for a small niche, I had to stay with a very small budget. So, there may be typos, and procedures I missed. Please let me know, if that's the case, so I can fix the content.

About the Author

I began as a fine artist in printmaking in the late 1960s. Then I was an illustrator for a publisher, a graphic design and typographer in the late 70s and early 80s, and an in-house art director for a large commercial printer through the 1980s. I began teaching commercial printing at a large vocational institute in Albuquerque in 1991. I wrote my first text book on the new all-digital printing workflow in 1994, released in 1996. I began to teach online at that time using downloadable PDFs. After five more tradepub textbooks, I began to seriously self-publish because of the smallness if my niches. I began writing and publishing full time in 2009.
