These new books in the Holidays series provide a basic introduction to global celebrations for young readers. Each book begins with a chapter introducing the holiday and featuring historical information on the holiday’s origins. The text is large and easy to read, and the photos are adequate and generally accompanied by interesting facts. However, the books’ layout often leaves surplus white space that is not particularly appealing. Diwali includes not only the story of the holiday but also more general information about India that would make it particularly useful in a world-cultures context. Overall, the books provide somewhat quirky but interesting, age-appropriate explorations of these holidays. Preschool-Grade 2. --Miriam Aronin
