Anyone can tie "lots of knots" but a proper knot will be stronger and easier to untie. It will also help to conserve rope. You will use less (lots of knots uses more than needed) and having to cut the knots out is less likely since they are easier to untie.

There are many knots, far too many for the average person to remember. Fortunately, there is no need to remember them all. Just being able to tie a handful of knots is enough to see you through any situation when a knot is needed.

The Useful Knots Book is a no-nonsense how-to book on tying the 25+ most useful knots. It comes with easy to follow instructions and pictures for each of the knots, as well as tips on when to best use each knot.This book is an invaluable resource for the Survival Fitness Plan enthusiast but is also a very useful book for anyone who wishes to master 25+ extremely useful knots.

In the Escape, Evasion. and Survival series there are a lot of references to knots through-out all the volumes. I decided to create this book as a "one-stop" resource guide to all the knots mentioned.

When I was working the US, one of my jobs was to teach kids basic bush-craft skills. An activity we liked to use on rainy days was knot tying. I already knew a lot of technical knots from my previous position as a roping instructor (abseiling/rappelling, climbing, high ropes, etc.) and my seniors in this new position added many other useful knots to my repertoire.

Most of the knots in this book are taken from these experiences. I also did a fair bit of research and added/swapped a couple of knots until I was happy that I had the best collection of the most practical knots.

Actually, I would have liked to have it only 10 useful knots, but I felt it wouldn't have given enough value to become a book. Also, if I was to make it only 10 I would still need to explain a lot of the others as building blocks anyway.

In any case, I am very happy with the final outcome and thanks to the simple and clear illustrations by Diana Mangoba, I feel that this is the only knot tying book any average person will every need.
