“Hill Country Teacher charts growth and change in the work and lives of...public school teachers in the rural Texas hill country... Oral histories spanning fifty years chronicling ... the roles of eight teachers who began their teaching careers as teenagers in one- room schoolhouses under severe social restrictions. They grew up with the profession, becoming pioneers in combining marriage and teaching, in special education, and in school integration.” – POLLY WELTS KAUFMAN Author of Women Teachers on the Frontier

About the Author:
In HILL COUNTRY TEACHER, Diane Daniels Manning combines her interest in history, education and “ordinary” people who quietly live extraordinary lives. She grew up in the historic town of Redding, Connecticut, began her teaching career in a rural school, and earned a Master’s in English and a Ph.D. She moved to another historic town — Boston, Massachusetts — where she taught at Tufts University and in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Harvard. Lured to yet another fascinating city, she assumed the position of chair the Department of Education at Tulane University in New Orleans. There she trained as an child and adult psychoanalysis and was certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association. Wanting to apply her backgrounds in both education and child psychology, she was recruited to Houston, Texas, where she co-founded a school for bright children with special emotional needs. Her fiction writing awards include the William Wisdom-William Faulkner prize and a Women in Film and Television Short Script award. A second collection of oral histories, BUT WE MADE IT! OTHER VOICES OF PIONEER TEXAS TEACHERS is forthcoming.
