Charles John Huffam Dickens (Portsmouth, Inglaterra, 7 de febrero de 1812-Gads Hill Place, Inglaterra, 9 de junio de 1870) fue un destacado escritor y novelista inglés, uno de los más conocidos de la literatura universal, y el más sobresaliente de la era victoriana. Fue maestro del género narrativo, al que imprimió ciertas dosis de humor e ironía, practicando a la vez una aguda crítica social. En su obra destacan las descripciones de personas y lugares, tanto reales como imaginarios. En ocasiones, utilizó el seudónimo «Boz». Sus novelas y relatos cortos gozaron de gran popularidad durante su vida, y aún hoy se editan y adaptan para el cine habitualmente. Dickens escribió novelas por entregas, el formato que usó en aquella época fue la ficción, por la sencilla razón de que no todo el mundo poseía los recursos económicos necesarios para comprar un libro. Cada nueva entrega de sus historias era esperada con gran entusiasmo por sus lectores, nacionales e internacionales. Fue y sigue siendo admirado como un influyente literato por escritores de todo el mundo.
