Thirty-year-old John Balwin has just lost his beloved fiancée to cancer, and he decides it is time to leave New York City, the only home he has ever known. He will take a thirty-day trip across the United States to start a fresh new life in San Francisco, California, where a new job and, perhaps, a new love awaits him. The only thing left to do is to say good-bye to his beloved city, and he decides on a last visit to Central Park.
There he meets a woman who will change his life forever—seventy-two-year-old Harriet Dinsmore. He agrees to bring her along on his cross-country trek, and their journey begins. Along the way, the pair pick up two more senior women, and together the four continue westward, transforming from a band of strangers into a family.
But along the way, Harriet is plagued by visions of the dead—such as Civil War soldiers at Gettysburg. One apparition in particular begins to haunt Harriet over and over again. A woman is beckoning to her, calling for Harriet to join her in the spirit realm.
Could the woman be an omen that Harriet is not long for this world?
