Aboutthe Book
Bioinformatics is the application of computational andanalytical methods to biological problems. It is a rapidly evolving scientificdiscipline. Genome sequencing projects are producing vast amounts of biologicaldata for many different organisms, and increasingly, storing these data inpublic databases. Such biological databases are growing exponentially, alongwith the biological literature. It's impossible for the researcher to remainupdated with latest developments in the field without the aid of computer-basedtools. Bioinformatics is all about building these tools.Bioinformatics is a broad topic with respect to depth of specialization. At ahigh-level, bioinformatics bridges biology and information science. Futurebiologists need to have basic computer skills and be able to use a multiplicityof software programs and navigate information resources. Some will augmentthese basic skills and become data analysts where they use command lineinterfaces, write computer scripts, and develop databases to automate dataprocessing activities. Bioinformatics programming skills are becoming anecessity across many facets of biology and medicine, owing to the continuingexplosion of biological data aggregation and the complexity and scale ofquestions now being addressed through modern bioinformatics. Bioinformaticsprogramme develops and applies methods to process, store and analyse datagenerated by high-throughput projects. ".The advent of open source software andthe commoditization and virtualization of computing hardware have drasticallyreduced the cost of software development.
The book is aimed to guide students about developing Bioinformatics Skills who are learning computationalapproaches to biology for the first time, as well as for experienced biologyresearchers. The book provides exhaustive webaddresses and links of tools, databases, software etc. with brief descriptionof each developed and available worldwide by reputed Institutions for Researchin the areas of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology. It also explores easy waysthat one can quickly find and effectively learn how to use resources. Readersmay take note that the landscape of tools and technologies used inbioinformatics is constantly changing and that long-term success inbioinformatics requires one to stay abreast of these changes. Keeping thesepoints in view latest development on Bioinformatics web links, tools, software, videos, online learning materials, webniars, blogs, social media etc. are alsorecorded. Links to YouTube channels in bioinformatics, existing free videoresources, open platforms for problem solving inbioinformatics, active web forums in computing analyses and online resourcesfor learning to code or use a bioinformatics tool, continuing educationbioinformatics training programs have been highlighted for comprehensivebioinformatics training and Open Course Ware initiative to meet the presenteducational and technological demand.
Now,with so much data being produced because of easier and more cost-effectivetools, there is an even greater need for specialists who can make sense of themountains of information in such a way that is meaningful for scientists andclinicians, and ultimately beneficial to customers and patients. There are 100%more job opportunities opening up in bioinformatics than ever before, much ofwhich is driven by an increase in venture capital investment.
The book helps to find right andrelevant computational bioscience resources quickly, easily and how to usethese independently, effectively andefficiently learn to use a resource for innovative research. This unique book presents major developments and trends in bioinformatics webresources and its applications. It is an essential source of reference forresearchers and graduate & post graduate students in bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, and biological sciences particularlyin with online learning initiatives over the past decade that has becomeincreasingly popular.
