Synopsis

This Companion is intended to help groups and individuals studying Rudolf Steiner's lectures on the Mark Gospel and, simultaneously, the Gospel itself. It provides background, footnotes as it were, on some of the things Steiner mentions which would have been familiar to his original hearers but are little known today in a very different culture. It also deals with some of the questions and problems which arose in one study group and reports some of the insights developed there.

Steiner's lectures on the Mark Gospel were the last and most demanding of his lecture cycles on the gospels. They were preceded by the lectures on the John Gospel (May 1908), John in relation to the other gospels (June 1909), the Luke Gospel (September 1909), the Matthew Gospel (September 1910), and Background to the Mark Gospel (1910 - 1911).

Another year elapsed before the lectures which are the subject of this Companion were given in Basel in September of 1912. Near the end of the last lecture, Steiner says, "I feel privileged to say at the end of our reflections on the Gospel of St. Mark: the program given at the initiation of our movement regarding Christianity has here been developed in detail."

These lectures were the culmination, the capstone of what Steiner had to say about the gospels. They are not easy reading and stretch our minds even beyond where the previous cycles had brought them. This study companion is offered as a modest help in appreciating and understanding them.
