A Land Rover is the star of this book. Assembled from the parts of various scrap Land Rovers found on dumps in the Sultanate of Oman, it emerged as a unique and functional four by four camper. Back in 1980 the author and his girlfriend loaded up the Rover and set off from the Sultanate of Oman with the aim of driving back to England but with no real idea of the route that they would take. Gathering information from other travellers along the way they ended up driving south, down through Sudan then across central Africa and back up across the Sahara desert to Europe. It is now interesting to see how the world has shrunk with the advent of the digital age but sad to see the often devastating effects of subsequent political and religious upheaval. It is hard to believe that not so long ago in 1980 there were no mobile 'phones or the Internet and that Africa was much more accessible. This book chronicles the five month journey of two ordinary people in their extra-ordinary vehicle.

Peter Fleming was born and bred in Peterborough, England. With formal qualifications as a mechanical engineer he first worked overseas in 1973 when he went to Iran with the then British Aircraft Corporation. He subsequently moved to Oman. Following his travels as chronicled in "In the Middle of Nowhere", he changed careers and moved to the oil industry for several years, working in Dubai, Saudi Arabia and the North Sea. In 1985 he rejoined British Aerospace and worked for two years in Indonesia followed by a short time in Brunei. There followed some twelve years back in the UK with BAe before moving to a smaller company specialising in the support of defence equipment. By 2005 both Peter and his wife Claire were ready for a major lifestyle change and they sold up and emigrated to Claire's native Australia where they bought a macadamia nut farm and ventured along the uncertain road of self-employment. Those ten years spent macadamia farming are the basis of Peter's second book "In the Middle of Macadamias - Growing Money on Trees" which is scheduled for publication in 2017. In 2016 Peter and Claire sold their farm and retired to New Zealand.
