Né à Bromley dans le comté du Kent en Angleterre, Herbert George Wells (1866-1946), plus connu sous le nom de H.G. Wells, est un auteur prolifique de romans, de nouvelles (plus de 80), d'ouvrages historiques, politiques, ou de satire sociale, ainsi que de manuels de vulgarisation. Considéré comme le père du genre (avec Jules Verne et Hugo Gernsback), il est resté célèbre pour ses romans de science-fiction. Ses oeuvres les plus connues sont La Machine à remonter le temps (1895), L'Île du docteur Moreau (1896), L'Homme invisible (1897), La Guerre des mondes (1898) ou Les Premiers hommes dans la Lune (1901). Il a été nommé quatre fois pour le Prix Nobel de littérature.
