Contrary to public opinion, dressing up like Christmas trees and quaffing litres of alcohol are actually the least amusing part of the diplomatic scene. The real humour lies underneath: a staid German Ambassadress earnestly discussing her fears, over a ladies’ tea, that the Embassy’s new laser loos will render her guests impotent if they misfire; a highly respected Ambassador relaxing on a nudist beach springing to attention to answer a call from his Foreign Minister. Or a disreputable Beagle, the only one in serious need of diplomatic immunity, doing her bit to complicate bilateral relations wherever she happens to be posted.Sandra Aragona describes the dilemmas of the English wife as she endeavours not to wreck her husband’s career and represent her adopted country with charm and forbearance whilst Holding onto A Life. The irrepressible Beagle and a seductively over attentive Military Attache’ suspected of selling secrets to the Russians hardly help matters.

Sandra Aragona is the English wife of an Italian diplomat. She maintains that writing this tongue-in-cheek account of the diplomatic life helped to keep her sane throughout their various postings. A collection of her articles "High Society and How to Survive it," is available as a paperback or hardback and as a Kindle ebook from Amazon. She now lives in the Italian countryside, mostly on the back of a horse.
