Chance Morgan, a career firefighter, puts his life on the line every day. His wife Annie finds herself at a crossroads, torn between the family she wants and the children she may never have. Annie and Morgan have reached the breaking point in their seven-year marriage. Unsuccessful at conceiving a child, they've finally given up on trying and on each other. If they reach the point of no return, they and their lives will be forever altered, irrevocably changed, with no hope of turning back. When a stray dog finds Annie and brings with her a litter of puppies and the promise to give Annie the family she's always wanted, will it be enough? Only a selfless act of love can pull Morgan and Annie back from the brink and save them now.

The hardest part about being married to a career firefighter for the past two decades has been going to bed and waking up alone, something I think Annie can relate to. But all this time alone taught me a thing or two about fear. One of them is not to focus on it every time he leaves for work. It doesn't help. And if I'd let it, it would have taken over my life. The other is to do the thing that scares you.
Over the years, every time I started writing a new romance, I would think, will this be the one I put all of my experiences as the wife of a firefighter to work for me? Will I write this one about a sexy firefighter hero? And for nearly a decade, without a conscious decision on my part, I haven't. There was always another story more pressing to tell. Then when the subject of retirement came up, as if the clouds parted above, I said, my next book will be about a firefighter and his wife. All of a sudden, I knew I could write that book, put my scariest fears, my darkest moments, and my deepest pride into a hero who did what my husband had done for the past twenty-five years.
It's possible that I'd only been kidding myself that I had been brave by not worrying about him every time he left for another twenty-four-hour shift or an off-duty call, because something had held me back from writing this story, from thinking about it too much, from considering it from my own point of view. But I'm so glad I finally did!
