Synopsis

This book, like the book on the ELL Critical Data Process, guides educators through a process to collect data, have critical conversations, and document their decisions in a matrix one data point at a time. The result is a pictorial image, the matrix, that represents the discussions of the team. This helps the team to determine whether to implement interventions, add more interventions, or make a special education referral. The discussions and work help the team to know the root cause of the presenting problem. Then the team designs a more targeted intervention or creates the ground work for better analysis of the special education referral. If a special education evaluation is started, this process helps create data that can lead to a more accurate special education evaluation.

About the Author

Steve’s first job in education, before he became a school psychologist, was as a driver’s education teacher. Steve had a wonderful opportunity to study school psychology and work at the university, so he followed that path. Steve started his career as a school psychologist in a district with a large ELL population. Over the years, he completed graduate work in ELL studies, eventually creating the ELL Critical Data Process. Steve and Ushani (Steve’s wife and co-author) have three books for sale on Amazon.com. The first book, The ELL Critical Data Process, is a resource for learning professionals for determining whether more interventions are needed or if a special education referral is a reasonable option. Their second book, Evaluating ELL Students for the Possibility of Special Education Qualification went into print in September of 2015, and focuses on the special education evaluation process for language learners and how to potentially achieve appropriate identification rates. Their third book, Special Education Referral or Not, follows a similar method of gathering and analyzing data through a team discussion process that is step-by-step. Ushani Nanayakkara is a writer and commercial trainer who has worked for two corporations as a training development manager. In her collaboration with Steve Gill she makes the material applicable to a broad audience. She also writes historical fiction and thrillers.
