Claire de Beauséant fait ses adieux à la vie mondaine le jour même où elle est abandonnée par le marquis d’Ajuda-Pinto. La suite de cette histoire est racontée avec la mort qui succède à l’amour. L’amour d’un jeune homme sans expérience, Gaston, vient briser la solitude de la femme abandonnée ; suit une période de bonheur parfait au bord du lac de Genève ; mais le couple est obligé de s’installer en Normandie où habite la mère de Gaston, la dévote Mme de Nueil qui réussit aussi à convaincre Gaston d’épouser une héritière insignifiante. Sa vie lui semble dénuée de sens à partir de cet instant : il se suicide avec son fusil de chasse pendant que sa fille et sa femme se tiennent dans la pièce voisine.
