In 1915 at age 38, Pittsburgh Mary Robert Rinehart left her three teenage sons and physician husband to travel to Europe on assignment for the Saturday Evening Post. She talked her way into covering conditions at the front based upon her credentials as a nurse. She toured front lines and field hospitals in Belgium, France and England, was the first reporter to interview Belgium's King Albert and England's Queen Mary, and scored numerous other important interviews. Originally hoping to counter German propaganda and the Allied censoring of information about conditions at the front after nearly 6 months of battle, Rinehart's reports reinforce American neutrality while also attempting to bolster her country's support of the Allied effort.

About the Author:
Mary Roberts Rinehart (August 12, 1876 – September 22, 1958) was an American writer, often called the American Agatha Christie, although her first mystery novel was published 14 years before Christie's first novel in 1922. Rinehart is considered the source of the phrase "The butler did it" from her novel The Door (1930), although the novel does not use the exact phrase. Rinehart is also considered to have invented the "Had-I-But-Known" school of mystery writing, with the publication of The Circular Staircase (1908). She also created a costumed super-criminal called "the Bat", cited by Bob Kane as one of the inspirations for his "Batman".
