Sylvia Fraser
In this ambitious and highly readable book, Fraser travels the psychic pathway. Using her experience as an incest victim, described in My Father's House (1989), as a diving board from which to launch an inner journey that is both personal and universal, Fraser alternates memories of her own psychic incidents with intellectually challenging chapters about such topics as gods, ghosts, reincarnation, and mysticism. Her thesis is that Western culture has repressed psychic phenomena to conform to an Aristotelian bias through which the materialistic is valued above the mystical. Now, with society awakening to what it has lost, a spiritual revolution is in the making. To bolster her claims, Fraser turns primarily to physics, especially to quantum theory. In the view of physicists, the structure of the world may not be so very different from ancient Eastern theories that defined the universe as a single, interconnected web, constantly in a state of vibration. Fraser contends that this renewed manner of perception will alter the way we view religion in particular and life in general, as well as freeing people to accept the possibility of the paranormal in their lives. Although there are plenty of books about psychic phenomena out there, few provide a philosophical framework with which to consider these ideas. Fraser does that and much more, spanning the spectrum of spiritual awareness. Ilene Cooper
