Jack Warren is back, and this time he is chasing a predator that stalks the streets of downtown Toronto. The vicious killer preys upon sex workers and leaves a bloody swath of carnage in his wake. Jack and his partner, Jenny Alton, join with the division’s Major Crime officers to hunt down this dangerous madman, but when Jenny is targeted as the next victim, the chase becomes personal for Jack. A violent confrontation will reveal horrifying secrets and Jack’s own bloody link to the monster, providing the highly anticipated climax to a gripping series.

Brent Pilkey is the author of the Rage series and a member of Toronto's police force who previously worked on their crisis intervention team in 51 Division. He lives in Toronto.
Pilkey follows his excellent debut (Lethal Rage, 2010) and its humdrum sequel (Savage Rage, 2011) with this in-between third Jack Warren thriller. When the story begins, Warren, a Toronto cop (as is the author), is stuck on desk duty pending the outcome of the investigation into the death of Randall Kayne, the villain of the previous novel. Boredom quickly turns to excitement when he learns he’s been cleared of wrongdoing and reassigned to the streets. He joins the hunt for a psychopath who’s targeting prostitutes, and soon the case becomes personal—so personal that, once again, he risks his own life to stop the violence. This is a much better book than Savage Rage, but not as good as the first Warren novel. Jack himself comes off as a bit of a jerk, and the writing is often clumsy, as when Jack’s wife is supposed to be hurt and angry over his decision to go back on the streets but merely comes off as a shrew. On the other hand, the story is much more balanced (in the previous book the villain barely made an appearance until the end), and the author sounds like he’s interested in Warren again (he was distinctly lethargic last time). The Warren series is getting back on track. --David Pitt
