Rather than return to the zoo, an elephant attempts to hide himself using a variety of disguises, such as butterfly and dinosaur costumes, with humorous results, until he and the boy he has found decide the best place for him is Africa

PreSchool-Grade 2-While playing in his sandbox, Hector meets an elephant that has escaped from the zoo. He agrees to hide the animal, disguising it as a moose, a dinosaur, a butterfly, a dog, and finally as his father. The costumes have unexpected results and finally the boy must help his friend return to Africa. Once the beast has boarded the plane, Hector thinks his problems are over-until he finds a mouse that is really a giraffe. Young children may laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of the scenario-the very idea of trying to hide an elephant is funny-but most of the humor is rather mature. When the creature goes outside in his dinosaur outfit, he is "...besieged by thousands of scientists in lab jackets." Butterfly collectors are excited about catching a giant specimen. Hector says to his charge, "'I'll have to tell Papa to go on a diet. His clothes fit you like a glove.'" The illustrations are funny, but are done in a somewhat garish style. Thick acrylic paint is accented with ink to create a bold, modern look that is bouncy and bright but not particularly attractive. A clever idea that does not quite live up to its potential.
