When you ask most authors when they began writing, they'll say they've been doing it all their lives. Not so with Leona Theis. "I suppose I started about fourteen years ago," the Saskatoon-based writer recalls. "I'd never done any before that, but I was living in Australia and found myself with a lot of time on my hands. Writing just seemed to come in and fill the void." "I was brought up in a small community, and as an adult I've been closely connected with a number of small communities, so it does influence my writing," says Theis, who was born in Saltcoats and raised in the eastern-Saskatchewan community of Bredenbury. "You get a feel for the types of people who live there, and the dramas of everyday life they go through." Although she draws inspiration for her stories from small-town life, she doesn't base her stories on anyone she knows.

About the Author:

Leona Theis is the author of one other book, Sightlines, recipient of two Saskatchewan Book Awards in 2000. She was also one of three writers featured in the 1998 edition of Coming Attractions, and has been cited in a number of award programs, including The Writers Union of Canada short prose and Prairie Fire competitions. Born in Bredenbury, Saskatchewan, Leona has lived in Saskatoon since 1973, with sabbaticals in Vancouver, Copenhagen, Perth and Canberra.
