Gr 2-4-Two books that examine specific aspects of animal anatomy through two-page chapters, crisp photos, and small ink-and-watercolor spot art. In the first title, the text describes various uses animals make of their noses, such as talking, poking, and defending themselves. Tails are given similar treatment in the second book. The animals chosen provide excellent examples of the concepts, and the well-placed photos have good captions. Swanson's breezy writing style presents many fascinating facts in a palatable form, but on occasion pushes the boundaries of scientific caution. For example, the author reports that the raised tail of a white-tailed deer means, "I know you're there, so don't bother chasing me. We'd both waste energy." Colorful, well-organized titles that will appeal to newly independent readers.-Ellen Heath, Orchard School, Ridgewood, NJ
