Synopsis

When a young boy sets out in search of frogs, he's amazed to find a vibrant, bustling world of wildlife in and around a bay where a loon calls, a turtle buries itself in the sand and a bullfrog goes "harump." The bay provides a day's fascination for the curious little boy -- and a day's fun for some elusive frogs. Pencil crayon illustrations give the book a lighthearted, summery feeling that perfectly suits the simple rhyming text.

Reviews

PreSchool-Grade 1A young boy heads out in an inflatable raft to look for frogs. Along the way, he finds lots of different animals, including several types of birds, a toad, a snake, and a turtlebut he doesnt find any frogs. Children looking at the book, however, will find them in lots of placesthey hide on the youngsters hat, they stand behind him while he looks across the bay, and they sit next to him under a tree when he returns to shore. The simple rhyming text is easy enough for beginning readers or an appropriate read-aloud for young children. The fun of the hide-and-seek frogs will have storytime participants yelling out loud to point them out, and theyll get to see many other animals and plants as well. Unfortunately, the pencil-and-crayon artwork is a little fuzzy. The texture of the canvas shows through, making the pictures look as though they are being viewed through a screen door. Still, this is a good addition for collections of summertime adventures.Dina Sherman, Brooklyn Childrens Museum, NY

An airy, light look at one boy's day at the bay. Camera in tow, a young naturalist sets out in search of frogs. While there are frogs a-plenty hiding under the dock, behind rocks, and perched on the rim of his hat, his eyes are opened to polliwogs, blue herons, crayfish, hummingbirds, loons and turtles. Rhyming couplets accompany each ``snapshot'' of nature, forming a short, caption-like storyline for this trip around the bay. At the end of his journey, he wonders if the creatures will say, ``I saw a human being today.'' Pencil crayon illustrations are pale but peaceful, adding to the meditative, meandering mode. The frogs in every spread will gratify find-and-point toddlers and other young listeners. (Picture book. 2-4) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
