Mary Labatt is an editor and writer. She is the author of the Dog Detective Sam mystery series, the Sam and Friends graphic mystery novels, the Puppy Sam level one early readers and a novel called A Puppy is for Loving. With all these dog books you can guess what Mary does on her Clear Creek, Ontario farm. She breeds and raises Rough Collies and Welsh Springer Spaniels. In the picture you can see Mary with two of her collie mothers, Annabel and Chloe.
Grade 2-5-In this sixth story about Sam, a dog detective, 10-year-old Jennie fears a weekend at Sagawa Lake will be dreadfully boring. However, her friend Beth looks forward to it. Unlike Mary Blount Christian's canine Sebastian, Sam can communicate with Jennie through telepathy. He has humorous characteristics, like wanting junk food and being bored by the girls' reading. The group dynamics among Sam, Jennie, and Beth make for an interesting detective team. The trip begins with an ominous warning from the ferryboat man about swimming in the lake. The mystery really becomes intriguing when the girls find a diary dated 1937 under the loose boards of their cabin. Its author speaks of evil on the island. As the girls and Sam explore in a boat, they come across a scary mask meant to ward off evil. They also find a cave full of bats and some webbed footprints. The girls are convinced there is a monster lurking in the lake; Sam is convinced he'll be famous when they discover this previously unknown creature. The questions are resolved when an encounter with some frogmen scientists explains most of the mysteries. Fans of the previous books will enjoy this latest installment.
