Although the Canadian Navy has diminished considerably in size during this time, the improvements in capability of these vessels equals any of their class worldwide. Roger Steed's meticulous record of each ship includes many of his own splendid photographs, along with considerable technical detail of capabilities and armaments, and operational information. He has also included a complete fleet list. For armchair sailors there is a practical section on the use of astro-navigation, and an exciting description of tricky manoeuvres involved in refueling at sea. A special section by Commander L. Fleck, CO of HMCS Toronto (95-7) recounts indetail what it's really like to "drive" one of Canada's latest warships, the Halifax class patrol frigates, He describes the ship's modern equipment, endurance, manoeuverability and handling characteristics, and the nature of her ship's company.

About the Author:

Roger Steed is a Technical Supervisor on the staff of Point Lepreau Generating Station, Atlantic Canada's only nuclear power station, some twenty-five miles southwest of Saint John, New Brunswick. He was born in Corbridge, near Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. He came to Canada with his parents in 1949 at the age of not quite eight years, living in Saskatoon, Victoria, and Windsor, Ontario, before being enrolled in the Regular Officer Training Plan and commencing his studies at the University of Toronto in 1959. He graduated in 1963 with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, and received his Commission in the Royal Canadian Navy, serving in the destroyers Chaudiere, Algonquin and Gatineau for the next three years. Since leaving the Navy he has been employed by Dupont of Canada at its Maitland Works, near Brockville, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited at its Sheridan Park Engineering Laboratory in Mississauga, Ontario Hydro at its Pickering Nuclear Generating Station on the eastern edge of Toronto, and has been with NB Power for the last twenty-four years. He and his wife Ruth have three grown children. Their son Geoffrey is a Lieutenant in the Canadian Navy today. Roger has somehow avoided driving the family completely away in spite of his being Second Oboist in Symphony New Brunswick, and spending a considerable portion of his spare time taking photos of warships. This is his third book, having brought out two books of photographs on railway subjects for BRMNA (British Railway Modellers of North America, Calgary Group), the first, Canadian Pacific in the Selkirks, Volume Two having been published in early 1994, and the second, Diesels in the Maritimes and Newfoundland, in 1995.
