Synopsis
They Never Rationed Courage provides a moving depiction of the daily life of a regular soldier in WWII; a young man from a small city in Canada recorded his experiences and sent them home. Direct and involving, the letters in this book capture events on a human level, far from panoramic views of the war, and unmediated by time: a little girl saves her canary during a bombing raid on London; soldiers treasure the gifts sent to them and the kindness of people in their homes away from home. The camaraderie, adventures, sadnesses and bravery of those who served the Allies are compellingly recalled in the fresh and vivid words of a young man who was there.

About the Author
Tom Patterson, founder of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival in Stratford, Ontario, is the author of First Stage: The Making of the Stratford Festival (McClelland and Stewart) and They Never Rationed Courage (Mercury.) He served with the Allied Forces in Europe from 1940 until 1945.
