Synopsis

Misha is excited about visiting his favourite aunt, especially now that she has moved into a cottage that is more than a century old. What an opportunity to search out secret passages and hidden cellars. But Aunt Dora's home in the historic town of Belfountain has also raised the interest of others: a society of crows, including the mystic albino Old One, all intent on finding something hidden. Before he knows it, Misha is drawn into his aunt's secret. She is a Keeper, one of a line of wise caretakers of the ancient Pandora's Box, and it is her duty to keep it under lock and key. All the evils of the world were released eons ago, but once a day the Keeper unlocks the box to dispense just a little of the Hope still in it. This remaining container of Hope must be guarded at all cost. There are only two keys: one rests with Aunt Dora, but now the other has been stolen by the crows. Misha must find the key before the clever and resourceful crows get to the box first. Determined to outwit the evil creatures and get the better of Old One, Misha has no idea how far he will have to go.

From the Back Cover

Misha's Aunt Dora has moved to an old cottage in the historic town of Belfountain, and Misha can hardly wait to visit. But when he arrives, Misha finds that his aunt has also attracted the interest of the local crows, who watch her every move. Odder still, they seem to listen in on Misha's conversations with his aunt. What is going on? Before he knows it, Misha is drawn into his aunt's secret. She is the Keeper, caretaker of an ancient box of great power. Aunt Dora holds one key to the mysterious box, but the other has been stolen by the crows. Now the evil birds are determined to find the box and claim it-along with its powers-for their own. The crows won't let Dora out of their sight. Now it's up to Misha to search out and reclaim the stolen key. And he must act alone.

Reviews

Gr 3-4-Misha's wish for his visit with his aunt is to have "a proper adventure, like kids in books" and, in short order, he finds one. Aunt Dora, he learns, is the Keeper of the original Pandora's box. Each day she unlocks it, cracks the lid open, and dispenses a little bit of Hope into the human world. Greedy crows have stolen the other key and are trying to find the box and take control of its contents. Then Dora enlists her nephew to recover the key. The story is long on plot (furious attacks by the crows, an underwater expedition with a giant sturgeon), but short on characterization, and the adjective-laden writing is often pedestrian. Misha gets his adventure, but readers learn little else about him, while the fascinating possibilities of a modern-day heiress to Pandora's legacy are never explored.-Beth Wright, Fletcher Free Library, Burlington, VT

Gr. 3-6. When Misha visits Aunt Dora, he makes an astonishing discovery. His aunt is the Keeper of the Box, passed down through the generations from Pandora, and each day she must unlock it and let Hope into the world. As Keeper, Dora holds one key, but the crows, who are desperately searching for the box, have stolen the second key. If the box is opened the wrong way, Hope will be destroyed forever, so Misha is enlisted to find the second key and return it for safekeeping. Middle readers unfamiliar with the story of Pandora won't grasp the significance of the threat, but they will find the crows' relentless pursuit frightening and Misha's success heartening. This story will work nicely as a follow-up to a study of mythology. Karen Hutt
