Dean Griffiths is a popular picture-book artist with more than twenty-five titles to his name. Grade 1-3-Ben resents being responsible for his younger sister when his mother works late, and he wishes he could trade her in for a puppy instead. Still, when she really needs him, he proves to be a terrific older brother-protecting her from snowballs, fixing her costume before her ballet performance, and even skipping hockey practice to watch her dance. His final piece of advice is that if she doesn't wear her glasses, she won't have stage fright because she won't be able to see the audience. Thanks to his efforts, Allison has a wonderful recital, and Ben realizes that he really doesn't want to trade her after all. This is a competently written story with two believable siblings. Crisp, winter-toned illustrations humorously portray their moments together and the full-page art pulls readers into the setting.
