"I could never visit the Hall enough. I would stand for hours staring at all the pictures, the sweaters and hockey sticks. I never thought that one day I'd have the opporunity to be in the Hall of Fame. But dreams, I guess, come true." - Wayne Gretzky
"To have the opportunity to play hockey as a professional athlete was a dream come true. To be further honoured with a place in this hallowed Hall has been both gratifying and extremely humbling." - Bobby Orr
When Captain William T. Sutherland established the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston, Ontario, he could not have possibly foreseen what his vision would become over time. In 1945, there was only an idea - to honour the game's greatest by memorializing their efforts in perpetuity. In the case of living memebers, that meant presenting them with a plaque recognizing their hockey acheivements and abilities. Sutherland was a great collector of hockey memorabilia, and he hoped to combine his ticks and gloves and pucks with the players' lives and memories in a museum. Although he died before his dream was realized, and although his dream shifted away from Kingston before it became reality, it was his vision that started what today is the greatest repository of hockey history in the world -the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronot, Ontario. There were but seven men honoured in 1945 by Sutherland, but today there are more than 300 enshrined in the hall - Playersa, Builders, and Officials who have contributed to the game, from the pioneers and innovators of the late 19th century to the present and most recently retired superstars of the modern era. Honoured Memebers is a tribute to the game and to the Hockey Hall of Fame. It offers biographies of everyone included into its pantheon of greats and includes photos of each member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. From Lord Stanley and the unforgetable players of the pre-NHL years to the 2003 inductees - Players Grant Fuhr and Pat Lafontaine, and Builders Brian Kilrea and Mike Ilitch - Honoured Members celebrates the lives of those who established, developed, and maintained the reputation of the world's fastest sport.
