This self-help guide to natural pain relief is a British import. Its low price belies its colorful and exceedingly attractive presentation of two dozen therapies and nearly 100 conditions to which the reader can apply them. The book begins with an overview of pain: how and why we feel it, its subjective nature, and the forms it takes (including psychological). This is followed by a 90-page section on ailments, accessed by its own table of contents organized mainly by pain location or by system. After a brief description of each ailment are listed several natural pain-relief options, ranging from reflexology, herbal medicine, and homeopathy to such movement therapies as yoga and tai chi. Yoga postures and reflexology or acupressure points, in particular, are often illustrated with color photographs. Sidebars and charts dot the text with additional information and cautions. Concluding each ailment discussion is a list of other possible therapies that may be sought from a qualified practitioner (e.g., acupuncture, hypnotherapy). Penny Spokes
