Synopsis
These engaging accounts of wartime romances range widely, from daring stories of the Lafayette Escadrille, the legendary American arm of the French air force, who conquered hearts wherever they went, to the tale of Captain Robert Digby, on the run in Occupied France, who fell in love with a French beauty named Claire Dessenne but was ultimately betrayed by her father. Here too is the sad account of the girl Ernest Hemingway fell in love with as he recuperated in a Milan hospital, and who was to inspire his novel A Farewell to Arms. Also the author of Titanic Love Stories and Civil War Love Stories, Gill Paul here looks at the bonds formed in the crucible of World War I. The collection profiles 14 couples-often using their own words-and illustrates their stories with snapshots, archival photos, and ephemera, with sidebars describing particular aspects of the war help to set the stage for the lovers.
