If there's one person Jacob is never going to be like, it's his alcoholic father. But Jacob is brought face-to-face with his own addictions when his father ends up in the hospital. Certain that he can easily overcome his drug and alcohol abuse, Jacob discovers just how powerful
dependency can be. A terrible tragedy takes Jacob to the breaking point where he will have to decide, once and for all, whether or not he is going to go through life wasted.

BRENT R. SHERRARD is the author of the Lorimer SideStreets novels Fight Boy, Final Takedown, and Wasted, the latter two of which received commendations from the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. He and his wife, Valerie, live in Miramachi, New Brunswick.
At 17, Jacob is old enough to recognize that he is becoming a slave to his addictions, just like his father. When an alcohol-induced accident lands his dad in the hospital, Jacob vows to quit drinking. This would be hard enough under ideal circumstances but Jacob’s life is filled with temptations—alcohol abuse is epidemic in his small New Brunswick community. Also, he may have to drop out of school to support his disintegrating family, and terrible things happen when the marijuana crop that he and a friend are cultivating is stolen. Sherrard has set an ambitious agenda for himself in this first novel, a title in the SideStreets series of high/low fiction. There’s enough material here for two novels and, as a result, some heavy stuff is treated superficially. What about the legality—and morality—of growing marijuana for sale? Should a murder go unpunished? One hopes readers will be inspired to discuss these issues, especially in the context of the well-realized bleakness of Jacob’s life and those of his friends. Grades 9-12. --Michael Cart
