What we have tried to do is provide rose lovers with a guide to the best 850 roses from the 10,000 roses that are available in commerce today. Trying to decide which rose to select can be a nightmare, we hope our selection will turn it into a sweet dream. The selection we have made is a very personal one based on our experience. We have picked the best from each of the 25 recognized groups of roses, right through all the old rose sections to climbers to the most modern roses being produced today. The roses we have included in the book are selected for health, longevity, scent, availability and profuse flowering, making sure that in each section we have the full range of colors. The way the book is set out is in a series of chapters explaining each of the sections of roses, so you can compare all the groups before making your choice. The final chapters are to help you with inspiration, they show pictures and ideas and ways of planting and mixing companion plants with roses, which we hope will help you in making the most of your garden.

About the Author

Roger Phillips was trained as a painter at Chelsea School of Art, and pioneered the use of color photography for the reliable identification of natural history subjects. Together with Martyn Rix, he has co-authored twenty-five books including Annuals and Biennials and Perennials, which have sold millions of copies around the world.

Martyn Rix is a botanist, plant collector and gardener. He worked as botanist at the Royal Horticultural Society's Garden at Wisley before becoming an independent botanical advisor and writer. Rix was awarded the Gold Veitch Memorial Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society for his services to horticulture.
